Memorial by Mette Hommel

𝑴𝑬𝑴𝑶𝑹𝑰𝑨𝑳 was an improvised site-specific piece played for the monument Memorial in Mindeparken in Aarhus in memory of fallen Danish and German soldiers. The monument contains four reliefs showing different scenes from the war entitled Departure, Battle, Armistice and Return.
Artist statement about MEMORIAL:
“Hidden in the middle of Mindeparken in the Southern part of Aarhus is a secret circle of sound.
You almost have to know it is there to find it. It is its own secluded little world. In here, everything sounds different, the light is different, it is a whole other world from the park surrounding it. Here you can find 4.140 names of dead people. You can walk amongst those, and no matter how softly you speak, your voice will be heard all over.
In this monument, I created a piece of site-specific music named after the monument, Memorial. I let the reliefs and the atmosphere be the foundation of the music, I let it surround me, and thus I disappeared into a world that was not my own.”
